Late last year, the Department of Labor issued and published a new I-9 form. This form is used to verify work eligibility of all new hires or re-hires. All employers should now be using the new I-9 form. At the time of publication, there was not a new Employer handbook. I’ve joked for years that it is typical government to make a two page form that needs 15 pages of instructions and a 65 page manual but they’ve done it again.
All kidding aside, the manual is a very helpful and instructive tool when filling out I-9’s and evaluating the documents being presented. The manual has color pictures and detailed instructions on all parts of the I-9 form. It also has tips as to when certain sections of the I-9 need to be filled out and when they don’t.
Please take some time soon to go to USCIS site and download the new new I-9 and M-274Handbook for employers. While your there, visit I-9 Central. It is a page for employers dedicated to the I-9
